I was ready to think this alone had to be the biggest strain on the team early on, but that was before Sakurai got around to the sheer amount of techniques Steve (or whatever skin is chosen) has - it’s a lot. The animations are limited in a way to be expected of a Minecraft custom character, but the team didn’t add anything that would be jarring to anyone adjusted to how they move while giving them all the usual Smash Bros. This was somewhat evident in the reveal trailer, but was on full display here. It clearly took a lot of time for them to get the animations just right. It is, however, just the amount of work you’d expect this team to put into a character that took them around five years to get into the series. The video displayed how the animations and move set were, let’s say, crafted with a lot of love. Not so here, where there was a two-day gap between the reveal and demonstration - the latter being saved for a Saturday at that, a good day really.Īs it turns out, there was a good reason: This character is more complicated than expected. When prior characters were revealed in their own streams and not Nintendo Directs, they were followed by Sakurai demonstrating how the character works. Ultimate differently compared to those previously announced. This unique playstyle makes Steve a fun character for leisure play among friends but unfit as a contender for competitive play.In my latest Fighting Games Friday post, I wondered why Nintendo and Masahiro Sakurai handled the reveal of Steve from Minecraft (with a number of other skins for other characters - the Alex skin being featured most prominently) for Super Smash Bros. Though no official tier lists exist by the developers, Eurogamer ranks Steve as average, or just “good,” alongside Sonic, Greninja and Samus, while Gfinity Esports ranks Steve as “S Tier” alongside Pikachu, Wario and Inkling. The building explodes upon the climax, sending his opponent flying and can cause enough knock back to take out bystanders. Steve’s final smash, House of Boom, displays a cinematic where the affected opponent is launched into a dark structure in a forest that resembles a Jungle Temple, filled with TNT, and besieged by Creepers and Zombies. The player can either enjoy a leisure ride around the stage or slam it into their opponent, effectively trapping and carrying them off to oblivion. for Wii U, but Steve is the first fighter to bring his own. Riding in a minecart has been a fun game mechanic in Super Smash Bros. The durability of these blocks is also dependent on the quality of materials used to craft them. His ability to create blocks midair makes up for this weakness by functioning as a platform with the additional benefits of absorbing incoming attacks. Steve has a short jump height that can hinder dodging enemy attacks and recovering ground. Though lacking in power, it is a great mechanic for setting up combos. Though it does little knockback and has a hitbox that cannot hit downed opponents unless their hitboxes are large, it can interrupt many opponents powering up or mid attack. Similar to Mega Man’s Mega Buster and Min Min’s Punch, by holding down the attack button while walking or jumping, Steve indefinitely swings his trusty sword. Resources such as wood, stone, sand, iron, gold, redstone and diamond are mined from the stage or from items such as his own TNT and are crafted into new or upgrade tools with. He possesses a sword, axe, pickaxe and shovel that can break after a certain amount of use and be rebuilt using resources. Steve’s design and mechanics are well preserved and recrafted from his world of Minecraft. Steve’s versatile move set arguably makes him one of the more distinctive of any downloadable fighter, but lacks the strength required for topping in tournaments. 13 as its 77th fighter after years of being a rumored potential. Minecraft’s Steve joined the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate roster on Oct. OctoJustin “Joker” Gee, 24, De Anza Engineering student and rising Twitch Streamer mining with Steve as block Kirby.
